Here’s my mandolin version of “O Tannenbaum” (also known as “O Christmas Tree”), a song that has become a staple of the holiday season. The song is based on a traditional folk melody, and it’s a piece I always enjoy playing on the mandolin. The 3/4 time adds a beautiful, rhythmic challenge that keeps me engaged as I explore the harmonies and twists in the song.
The modern lyrics were written by Ernst Anschütz in 1824, and over time, this beautiful melody became associated with the Christmas tree tradition. I love playing this piece with heart and soul, and I hope you can feel that through my performance.
For this One Man Band performance, I’m playing a Michael Kelly Acoustic-Electric Legacy Dragonfly Flame Mandolin, using a Boss ME-80 guitar multi-effects pedal, running through a Boss RC-30 Loop Pedal and a Fishman Solo Performance System SA220 PA.
